This year, India Design ID presents The Deep Fathom, a curatorial celebration of this verticality and a tribute to the absolute weight of thought that defines the architecture of mastery.
In our current design landscape, we have become accustomed to the view from the surface. Our engagement with objects has grown increasingly horizontal, focused on the immediate aesthetic and the final silhouette. As we have moved toward the speed of the end product, we have inadvertently moved away from the depth of the work itself. We see the finish, but we often miss the fire. We appreciate the form, but we overlook the foundational friction. The Deep Fathom is a decisive move to reclaim this lost territory. It is an invitation to move beyond the peripheral glance and descend into the submerged labours, i.e. the invisible, relentless hours of trial, the anatomical integrity of a build and the material intelligence that thrives beneath the surface.
To fathom is the ultimate human measurement of depth. Its origin lies in the Old English word fæthm, meaning ‘outstretched arms’. It is the physical span, the reach of a human’s embrace of their craft. It is a mandate to recognise that true value resides in the sovereignty of process. In this depth, sustainability is no longer an elective or an additive—it is the foundational bedrock. We believe that a project’s ecological footprint is its most profound structural truth. To fathom a work is to understand its origin, its lifecycle and its permanence, recognising that true craft is inherently restorative and that a deep dive into making requires an uncompromising commitment to the earth from which the material was birthed.
This theme highlights the liberation found in immersion: the profound freedom that emerges when a designer sinks into the slow, foundational rhythms of creation to produce something of lasting value. Our mission for this edition is to foster a transformative connection between the maker and the seeker by bringing these fathomed layers of design to the light. We invite our audience to move beyond the first glance and engage with the Quiet Labours, to understand the seasoning of timber, the alchemy of a glaze, and the ancestral wisdom of a hand-knot.
