Set amidst the renowned Provençal organic winemaking estate and art centre, Château La Coste, Paul Mathieu’s ‘Still Motion’ is a meditative dialogue between furniture, objects and and his other works, detached from their functional constraints.
The multi-talented innovator who’s unique aesthetic was first recognised by renowned French designer, Andrée Putman, amalgamates the sensibilities he has developed over the years, inspired by New York, Aix-en-Provence, Murano and India, with sensual and sculptural silhouettes. Exhibiting for the first time in France, the showcase is a rare opportunity to view Paul Mathieu’s custom furniture and lighting work in one setting. And what an iconic setting it is!
The Renzo Piano designed architectural pavilion is the ideal location for this exhibition that showcases a combination of geometric precision and natural, sinuous beauty, with approximately 200 hectares of hills, woods, streams, vineyards and walking paths flanked by the work of great artists and architects, including Tadao Ando, Jean Nouvel, and Frank O. Gehry, amongst others.
‘Still Motion’ will be on display till May 22nd and precedes the reopening of the Madeleine, a remarkable seventeenth century Baroque church located in the heart of nearby Aix-en-Provence, where visitors can re-discover some of Paul Mathieu’s other works, commissioned by the church in 2005: a large marble altar, a pulpit, a three-tier Venetian glass chandelier, and other one-of-a-kind rock crystal and bronze pieces.
Paul Mathieu has been a keynote speaker at India Design ID, ID Symposium
