K Residence by Matra Architects is an understated homage to the vernacular architecture of Udaipur that seeks to integrate contemporary design sensibilities with the historical urban ecology of the region. Comprising three interconnected pavilions clad in precast slabs of white textured concrete, the residence maximises the spectacular views of the lake and the Aravalli mountains beyond. Featuring large windows, an interspersion of skylights, and restrained elegant interiors, the composition is defined by vast terraced gardens that display the owner’s extensive collection of sculptures. The three parallel, two-storeyed pavilions have varying layouts but have been optimised to best showcase the view and envelope the ethereal light at dusk and dawn.
Situated nine metres above the Fateh Sagar Lake, the tactility of the cladding is complemented by square columns that reference the detailing of the city’s marble buildings, temples, and palaces. The central pavilion houses a vestibule that leads to the prayer room, a dining room, and a family living room. The second floor hosts the master suite, with an adjoining study and balcony. The smallest pavilion is located to the right of this space, connected by a glass corridor. It comprises a formal living room flanked by covered and collonaded verandahs that overlook the manicured garden-scapes. Above this is a deck with a plethora of seating and lounging options. The longest pavilion is situated at the rear, where the ground floor features an office, a kitchen, and two bedrooms. Two additional en-suite bedrooms and a semi-open terrace are located on the level above.
