The Seasons by ABM Architects is a 185-square-metre apartment in BKC, Mumbai, showcasing the inherent relationship between fashion and interior design. “Both disciplines shelter the body, react to spatial constraints, rely on a creative process, and transform an idea from a two-dimensional concept into a three-dimensional reality,” said the designers. In this apartment, fashion heavily informed our design intent for the interior spaces; each room in the home was correlated to a specific fashion trend, culminating in a design that works for every season.
The apartment follows five principles:
UNWIND: An emphasis is placed on the use of soft fabrics throughout the apartment to create a calm, comfortable environment.
BRIGHTEN UP: The large windows provide panoramic views of the surrounding context and also admit plenty of natural light into the home. Mirrored walls reflect this abundance of light.
ARRAY OF TEXTURES: The spaces are amplified through the use of textured wall finishes, flooring, and ceilings.
VERTICALITY: Vertical lines create the illusion of a heightened room. The verticality is further enhanced by the full-height windows.
ACCESSIBILITY: Revolutionary technology powers the array of amenities found throughout the space. The apartment also accommodates a diverse range of individuals of all ages.
The spaces have been designed as follows:
Spring is the inspiration for the living and dining areas. The layout provides a welcoming atmosphere for all. This is created with the flexible arrangement of the furniture. Furthermore, edgy wallpapers, off-whites, and rich colours create depth and the illusion of a larger space.
Monsoon is the inspiration for the master bedroom. The curation of rich textures and deep blue hues adds interest to the bedroom, making it cosy, charming, and comfortable. The selection of a few larger functional accents instead of many small decorative items makes the master bedroom look more spacious, transforming it into the perfect hideaway.
Autumn is the inspiration for the guest bedroom and library. The library transforms into a guest room with the use of multi-functional furniture such as a sofa-bed, modular shelving, and a library that pulls out from the wardrobe. This also eliminates clutter and enhances the appearance of space.
Summer is the inspiration for the kids’ bedroom. The children’s bedroom consists of an in-built closet, beds that resemble books, and a desk for studying. It reflects summer through its playful colours and patterns.
Frost is the inspiration for the second bedroom. The room adapts to those who occupy it while still retaining its own identity. The use of neutral colours in conjunction with modern-retro furniture, artifacts, and lighting to add character while maintaining visual balance.
Winter is the inspiration for the corridor and kitchen. The corridor is the space that links the home, and the kitchen blends in seamlessly with the rest of the spaces using neutral winter-themed tones.
