Tic-Tac-Toe by DOT is a penthouse apartment in Surat that derives its name from the rigid nine-grid format that it has been designed in, as well as the playful nature of the clients. In a city like Surat, which is constantly growing and where the elite are divided between the idea of villas in gated communities or apartments in well-maintained complexes with amenities, a joint family of three generations opted for the latter, choosing interdependent living over the independent living. The site, an eleventh-floor penthouse overlooking the dynamic urban spine in its background while stealing views of the river Tapi between adjoining apartments, poses a challenge and an opportunity at the same time.

The potential of the duplex apartment is tapped into for ample natural light and cross ventilation by keeping the spaces free-flowing and transparent, only to be divided by varying scales. A connection to the ground is established by introducing various small and large green pockets into the house. The interiors, a combination of natural materials such as wood, cement, and exposed brick, are an attempt to be bare and to create a breathing quality of the materials. The indoor environment is soothing, with colourful furniture adding vibrancy to the house and reflecting the playful nature of clients.
