Dedicated to re-envisioning a more democratic Mumbai, PK Das is a prolific architect whose wide spectrum of work includes rehabilitation projects for informal settlements, affordable housing models, policy framework and planning for urban and waterfront developments, and protection and conservation of natural areas. Through his practice, PKDA Architects, he has worked on over 150 diverse projects over 45 years, campaigning for reform in the city’s real estate-driven planning systems. Most notably, as chairperson of Mumbai’s Waterfronts Centre, Das spearheaded the renewal of Mumbai’s coastline utilising participatory planning processes, prioritising the relationship between architecture and people in imagining the sustainable ecology of cities. He has authored and lectured extensively about democratic urban planning, making him the first ever international recipient of the prestigious Jane Jacobs Medal by the Rockefeller Foundation.
