Pichvai Tradition & Beyond Curated by Pooja Singhal

share article

Art enthusiast and designer, Pooja Singhal, recently launched the fourth edition of her Pichvai revival series. On display at the iconic Bikaner House in New Delhi till Sunday, 5th May, the exhibition features a unique presentation format that highlights the curator’s vision; to showcase Pichvais in a modern avatar.

In the 7 years that Singhal has been working on this project, she has set up her own atelier of artisans who execute using traditional materials and techniques. In order to accentuate the relationship between the creations and the spaces that they inhabit, she has ensured that some of the Pichvais are hung as installations, through innovative wall mounting techniques.

Pichvai Tradition & Beyond has featured at noteworthy venues across India, including the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (2016), India Art Fair, Delhi (2016, 2018) and as a permanent exhibition at The Museum of Legacies, Jaipur. Bikaner House is the essence of Rajasthan. The central space in it’s traditional splendour combined with the minimal aesthetic of the Art Gallery is an ideal setting for this showcase of meticulously detailed, hand printed textiles.

Speaking about the exhibition, Pooja Singhal said, “my passion and journey have been to critically engage with everything that is traditionally Indian – from design and fabric, to techniques and art. I am able to take a traditional art or craft, maintain its ethos, and still bring out something from within it that is aesthetically and culturally relevant today. For me, there must be a social component with the commercial in order to truly sustain the weavers and artists – something that is perpetual in nature.”

Pooja Singhal was also one of the winners in the Living Spaces category at ID Honours, India Design ID 2019
