Nirvana Farmhouse by Put Your Hands Together is a rustic retreat on the outskirts of Mumbai that is definitively contextual, perfectly integrating its environment in terms of form and materiality. Featuring an unostentatious and understated interior concept that overlooks approximately two acres of farmland and an abutting, functionally landscaped garden, the 280-square-metre home is sustainable and unmistakably vernacular. Recycled and restored furnishings, a foundation composed of regionally-sourced black basalt, and a roof crafted from Mangalore tiles within a metal framework and insulated by pinewood are some noteworthy architectural interventions. Limestone flooring and oxidised surfaces are faultless complements to the open living spaces.
The architects have addressed climatic conditions such as extreme temperatures and torrential rainfall by using stabilised earth blocks rather than rammed earth for the 12-inch-thick walls of the residence. Natural light is abundant, and there is cross ventilation throughout the home, which was designed in a traditional spatial arrangement where living spaces are circumambient to an open courtyard. This is further facilitated by open verandas. Solid teak wood for the louvred and panelled openings and shutters is an aesthetic yet practical décor intervention. Another distinctive feature of the farmhouse is that the architecture of the spaces was frequently determined by the varying dimensions of salvaged and upcycled furnishings from the chor bazaar and other dilapidated residences. A majority of the LED lighting fixtures have been refurbished from old ships and homes in the region as well. The natural and artificial lights are also accentuated by mirror-polished, oxidised surfaces.
