IKSOI Design Studio recently completed a project at the Courtyard by Marriott in Ahmedabad, titled B & W. The stunning monochrome interior of the liquor store-cum-permit room is an ironic, somewhat whimsical dig at the fact that it is situated in a ‘dry state.’
The space is divided in two areas: first, where government officials issue liquor permits and second, where liquor bottles are exhibited. The stacks along the wall are created by simple repetition of a single module; prefabricated sheet-metal elements, assembled on site. The design strives to minimise the number of spatial elements, and avoids creating visual chaos, in order to celebrate liquor.
The design of B & W exaggerates this irony of alcohol in a ‘dry state’ through tall display stacks for the liquor bottles – almost as an analogy for valuable manuscripts in an archive. Each bottle on the wall has been allocated a generous amount of space, sort of celebrating it as a venerable object.
This multi-layered design concept makes for an unmatched shopping experience.
