Here’s what to watch out for at Design Trail

After the success of the Design Trail at Shakti Mills during the inaugural event last year, this year’s celebrations will take things up a few notches.

Five creative hubs nestled in the Shakti Mills complex will come together to form a unique curated experience. Brands Abaca, FCML, Red Blue & Yellow, Sarita Handa and Tranceforme play host to unique collections and experiential pop-ups from 18th to 20th November, 2016.

Here’s a guide for you to know what to follow at the #IDSatelliteDesignTrail:

Sarita Handa: For 25 years, the leading textile manufacturing brand has relied on the use of traditional Indian craftsmanship to create modern, contemporary designs. Their range of furniture, decorative cushions, bedding and upholstery echo this aesthetic. The brand will conduct a series of installations from Mumbai based creative Arrti Mansinghka who makes upcycled artworks from worn-out denims, self-taught fibreglass and resin caster Lekha Washington who runs studio Ajji and specialises in functional art pieces, Ishrat Sahgal of Mishcat Co design house who uses carpets as art pieces and curates an entire space around them, Parul Thacker whose multimedia installations play with the idea of surface and depth, creating a magical tension between material and form and the 2014 EDIDA India Young Talent winner Valay Gada who is the founder of Cobalt Designs and aims to maintain the fine balance between traditional crafts and newer technologies in design.

Abaca: For over ten years, they have brought treasures from the South East in the form of natural fabrics and materials to patrons in India. A stunning new series comprising outdoor furniture, wall art, ceramics and lamps will be launched during the trail. Look out for two installations where Anjali Mody of Josmo Design Studio will work with sandstone products, while the students of Rachana Sansad Academy depict the essence of childhood and incorporate images from the NGO, Toy Bank.

Tranceforme: Their new limited edition collection, titled “The Big Piano”, comes from Samira Rathod’s SRDA Studio. “Textile Euphoria”, an exclusive pop up during the trail will feature three designers: Vaishali S, MAKU by Santanu Das and Jason and Anshu Cherian of Small Shop. Akshay Sahgal and Jatin Kampani of Merchants of Cool will present limited edition photographs and “The Cube Project”.

FCML: Celebrating its 15th year, FCML presents its Design Initiative which marks the occasion with a creative collaboration with Indian fashion’s first benchers: JJ Valaya, Abraham & Thakore and Aneeth Arora of Pero. The result of this endeavour is The Incidental Collection where each of the designers has envisioned three series of tiles that combine bold colours, vivid motifs and intricate patterns.

Red Blue & Yellow: The triumvirate that run RBY, as it is known to their loyalists, are bound by a common passion to create modern furniture using fine Indian craftsmanship. Their collaboration with Bharat Floorings and Tiles marks the fusion of wood and concrete. Aptly titled “Space & Time”, it consists of a collection of tabletops and clocks. They will host installation by Prasad Naik, who will display an interactive installation and collection of photographs by him that aims to make art accessible and affordable.
