Heatherwick Studio‘s first residential project in New York features a striking facade characterised by bulging windows. The Lantern House, comprised of two towers (10 and 21 stories) connected by a sculptural glass lobby that flanks The High Line, draws inspiration from the neighbourhood’s maritime warehouses. Hand-laid antique grey brickwork is complemented by industrial metal detailing. The oriel windows with textured grid exteriors create a refreshing addition to West Chelsea (which has recently become a haven of contemporary architecture with creations by Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry, and Shigeru Ban to name a few.)
Housing 181 luxury condominiums, Lantern House will feature state-of-the-art amenities for leisure and wellness in addition to the one to four bedroom residences (some with private terraces) and a plethora of distinctive penthouses. “The design came from looking at the city’s existing buildings and thinking about which ones you might want to live in, not just look at. It seemed to us that practical, crafted, human-scale details such as shades, mullions, and window sills might have a role to play again in making homes feel comfortable and inviting,” said Founder, Thomas Heatherwick.
Every home features a unique interior with over 10′ ceilings, an abundance of natural light and a layout that augments the lantern-shaped bay windows. Apart from adding to the charm of the area, each alcove is fitted with several window seats where one can take in unparalleled views of the Hudson River and breathtaking skyline.
In designing Related Companies‘ landmark project at 515 West 18th Street, Heatherwick Studio has also added to his repertoire of contemporary masterpieces such as the Vessel at Hudson Yards and Pier 55, creating a breathtaking sculptural corridor along the far West Side of New York City.
