In the underground tunnels and chambers of Frankfurt’s spectacular new Goldkammer (Chamber of Gold), more than 500 exhibits span a cultural and historical framework of more than 6,000 years. From its origins to its symbolic significance in various cultures and its use as a means of exchange and payment—visitors are invited to discover many ways of gold.
On just 480 sq m in the heart of Frankfurt, renowned museum specialist HG Merz designed an appropriate architectural framework for the rare exhibits—a room sequence of tunnels and chambers, where 500 gold artefacts are elaborately presented in a special light atmosphere.
The journey through the hallways incorporates digital mediums such as animated display boards and videos that provide detailed insights into the cultural and historical context of the exhibits. Children can expect a particularly entertaining tour through the underground exhibition rooms: along a vein of gold on the ground, they discover the secrets of the museum mascot ‘Agulia’. At digital stations located along the pathway, Agulia simplifies the meaning of select exhibits using fairy tales.
In addition to the unique exhibition, the museum is home to Aureus—a cafe, bar and restaurant where esteemed chef Christian Senff serves up culinary delights. Last but not least, Goldkammer’s largest chamber, with extensive LED walls and the staging of 300 gold bars from the Rothschild Collection, offers a venue for exclusive events.
