Kampai, which literally translates to ‘bottoms up’ , appeals to any globe-trotting soul that enjoys true combination of flair and buoyancy of contemporary design , while celebrating iconic Japanese elements in an exquisite and graceful setting. Designed by Chromed Design Studio and located in the affluent sector of Delhi- Aerocity, it is being tagged as the sole centre for an authentic Japanese Izakaya dining experience in the city. Read the designers’ note below:

Kampai elegantly redefines a modern day Indian gastro-pub experience with a Neo-Japanese sprinkle, in this contemporary eatery. The evident design ideology revolves around the Japanese ideal of minimalism and combines it with an authentic touch, creating a serene and elegant fusion space. Delving in ambient shades of pink, a Sakura ceiling , Zashiki seating and a projection mapping depicting various seasons of Japan : congruently render this space with subtle representation of intrinsic culture.

The entire area has been divided into 3 zones, with variant styles of provisioned seating for 100 guests and a buffet of diverse essences, tied together in an authentic Japanese fashion. Posing for complete symmetry, two dining spaces on either side of the entrance passage, are devised with plush velvet seating and traditional wall décor enhancing the Japanese ethnicity of the milieu, while conglomerating the view of the external environ through glass interfaces. Completed with bonsai and sunken ‘zaishus’ (the Japanese chair with no legs), the private dining has been implemented in the manner of the traditional Japanese ‘chashitsus’(tea rooms) with vibrant Koi Art, illustrated as artistic assets. Further credibility to the chosen cultural concept has been infused with the inculcation of bamboo lights and Fusuma doors.

The varying seating configurations are flanked by a live sushi counter with themed pattern tiled walls, for a sneak peek into the chef’s craft while savouring the delicacy in an authentic Japanese aura. Inspired from Japanese low-interaction ‘ramen’ booths, the space design also includes ‘Koshitsu booths’ with 4-seater layouts, that form a unique contrast to the other traditional seating compositions incorporated in the rest of the restaurant. These visceral booths are enveloped in wine coloured curtains and inculcated with a lustrous brass cut-out wall décor with complied lighting fixtures.

Drawing close resemblance to the quaint hues of Sakura flowers, native to the Japanese tradition, the colour palette utilises profuse amounts of wine and pink with the occasional golden to add a glistening touch. The occasional colour streaks provided by traditional pop art of the Geisha community, amplify the indulging yet relatable engaging environment. Designed with a fundamental recessed ceiling and marquino monolithic flooring, these intrinsic facets aid in the formulation of the classic atmosphere.
