Inspired by Joan Didion’s essay “Why I Write”, the exhibition “What She Means” is an exploration of the female experience in all of its honesty and authenticity. Cultivate Art has organised the event to continue its endeavour to promote Indian artforms and artists. The exhibition title serves dually as a question and a statement, meandering through the grappling realities of women’s challenges. It highlights the significance of women’s voices in art and culture. Thought-provoking questions are raised: What does she mean when she paints a canvas with bold colour strokes? What does she mean when she sculpts figures defying conventional forms? What does she mean when she captures moments of vulnerability? Every piece in this collection attests to the multifaceted nature of female expression. Drop by The Stands in Mumbai from the 22nd to the 25th of August 2024 to browse the show.

In her essay, Didion claims, “I write entirely to find out what I’m thinking, what I’m looking at, what I see, and what it means.” She further writes, “We tell ourselves stories in order to live.” The women artists in this exhibition portray their stories through their art pieces, creating narratives that resonate with our experiences. “What She Means” celebrates these individual stories by acknowledging the rich tapestry of female creativity through identity, perception, and articulation. It offers a kaleidoscopic view of being a woman, reminding us that art is a medium that catalyses finding meaning in everyday chaos.

Featured artwork will be showcased by artists such as Arpita Akhanda, Jayati Bose, Vijaya Chauhan, Gayatri Halder, Dhara Mehrotra, Puja Mondal, Nandita Mukund, Khanjan Maru Soni, Hansika Sharma, Kopal Seth, and Rewati Shahani. Through their lens, we are invited to gain a deeper insight into the female world and our footing within it. Cultivate Art continues to be a nurturing platform for contemporary art on a global scale, connecting young collectors and new art enthusiasts. This year, they will pioneer new frontiers of creativity through exciting collaborations, showcasing emergent global artists who reshape the landscape of artistic expression.
