All it takes is one single thread. To make an entire universe, imagine new possibilities, and create new artistic landscapes. At least, that’s what Advanced Nature’s exhibition at ID Mumbai will reveal. Titled APHORISM—Threads that Imagine Tapestry, it has been curated by Jesh Krishnamurthy and comprises eighteen nature-inspired product displays. Every piece is inspired by elements of the Earth and waste materials and is crafted through sustainable processes. As Krishnamurthy states, “The idea is to infuse homes with natural designs that remind us that conscious living is possible. Our aim at India Design ID has been to platform the most exciting developments in the world of design, and the work being done by Advanced Nature is a wonderful transgression of fixed boundaries that exist between art & design, artistic appeal & functionality.” Make sure to stop by the exhibit at ID Mumbai 2024 and discover what an eco-conscious design future looks like. At the ID Special Project pavilion, supported by Greenlam Industries.
About APHORISM
The very word “aphorism” means “a pithy observation which contains a general truth”. A word that translates to the concise, condensed, economical expressions of more significant meanings, this has been carefully chosen as the title of an artistic exhibition that deals with gargantuan themes of the Earth’s relationship with nature, our relationship with waste, and ideals for a sustainable lifestyle spearheaded by art. With APHORISM, Advanced Nature merges the chemistry of waste with aesthetics and artisanship, transforming discarded materials into path-breaking designs that are both functional and beautiful. Their process honours the handmade, integrating the skills of rural artisans with modern techniques. These expressions reflect the fluidity of life, embracing empathy for the planet, the crab, and the artisans behind it. Here, imagination, creativity, and craftsmanship come together in a tapestry of sustainable possibilities, constantly reimagining how we live and design for the future.
These ideas result in a bewildering array of artworks that double as ingenious products—the perfect marriage between aesthetics and functionality. Lighting solutions, wall decor, collectibles, sculptural pieces, and more, form the exhibit put forth by Advanced Nature at ID Mumbai. Come by and discover a world where waste is renewed with fresh life and the borders of art and design collapse to give rise to innovative creations.
About ID Special Project
As we stand proudly as India’s most definitive design week, we aim to constantly interrogate the wide landscape of design, all it encompasses, and everything it could possibly be. ID Special Project is one such method of continuing our questioning and experimenting with design, art, and all that lies in between. Every year, India Design ID platforms one unique project that fosters experimentation in design through this pavilion. This year, Advanced Nature pivots the ID Special Project pavilion around sustainability and natural materials, encouraging a dialogue between conscious living and product design.Â
Art Practices that Practice Change
Based in Pune, Advanced Nature is an art practice that researches sustainable materials, processes that help the Earth, a supply chain built on artisans and rural talent, and the simplification of manufacturing. All of this inspires them to present a unique model to an Art Practice whose purpose is not just to make art but to create systems and design for a kinder world. Building on ideals of science & positive technology, Advanced Nature relies on the science of sustainability and waste and by-products. Their practices are rooted in seeking answers to questions made from natural, discarded, and waste materials. They synthesise binders and glues in their workshop, some of which are the most energy-efficient and sustainable products available today. Ultimately, the gallery aims to catalyse the search for sustainable science and environmentally-conscious living.Â
