Soaring in the sky-high towers of South Mumbai,  Apartment 21 by Jason Wadhwani, is an aerial spectacle at its best. Here, what you see is what you get: a sophisticated, contemporary home that also functions as a party pad. And rightly so. Who wouldn’t want to party in an attractive house? It would be a waste to think otherwise.

Focusing on the client’s requirements while incorporating his own notions, the lead designer, Jason Wadhwani, brings this sky-soaring space to its entirety. Of course, its towering location adds to its beauty, with double-height ceilings, a breathtaking view of Mumbai’s beachline, and a majestic carpet area—all performing like cherries on a cake. Wadhwani uses these key highlights to his benefit, turning this home into a sheltered sanctuary in the sky at Prabhadevi’s latest landmark building, 25 South.

With his eloquent presentation of minimal and modern design, Wadhwani brings in equal tchotchkes of monochromatic tones and splashes of creativity to accentuate the interiors. To contrast with the otherwise neutral palette, Wadhwani uses decorative luminaire fittings and furniture pieces with whimsical dollops of art. The apartment spans approximately 2,300 sq ft and has three bedrooms, a living room, a dining area, a kitchen, a den, and a powder room. While merging aesthetics and functionality initially posed a challenge for the design, Wadhwani relies on timeless design tactics and elegant colour palettes to do the space justice. Wadhwani makes this abode a tad above the extraordinary by allowing ample light to enter inside, heightened ceilings that majestically imbue grace, and tall windows that offer clear, panoramic views of the metropolitan.

On entering through the foyer, an extensive living room is spotlit. A tall ceiling height enhances this elegance, with cladding in graphite stone tile accentuating a raw, architectural look and feel. The living area is separated into two tranches, hosting several seating banquets for soirees and guests. Beyond these lounges, a balcony with a picturesque view and potted plants make themselves home.

The den depicts a tale of browns, hazels, and whites. This cosy space, reserved for residents, features wooden floors paired with design elements like a tall reading lamp, a round coffee table, and elusive wall art. The powder room, located on the other side of the den, claims to be one of the house’s most dramatic corners. It is clad in dark green marble stone, which is complemented with wooden accents. Image Credit: Ishita Sitwala

Monochromatic hues and pops of art carry on in the dining area, beyond which a sleek passageway leads to the more intimate corners of the abode, such as the den and the powder room.

Enhanced with wooden flooring, the master bedroom highlights a contemporary style through minimal wainscotting panels on the walls, muted tones for the interiors, and a monochromatic chaise to complete the look.

In the children’s bedroom, natural light plays a catalytic role in the design as the marble flooring lights up, accentuating its stony lustre and raw shellac appearance. Mumbai’s iconic sea link debuts through the windows, and the collection of framed jerseys proudly takes the wall—personalising the room to befit its owner. To juxtapose the minimal palette, the designer adds colours through furniture pieces, ceiling lights above the side tables, the upholstery, and the frames.

He captures the true essence of luxury with minimalism, accomplishing both his vision and the client’s imagination of their home. Through a contemporary approach to design and styling, he creates a modernistic narrative of this home, rendering it a distinct identity and perspective. As one journeys through these interiors, we see that amidst the city’s breathtaking spectacle, Jason Wadhwani certainly achieves something just as fantastic as this.
