Located in Ahmedabad, the origin city of this multifaceted architectural partnership studio, the MD Apartment by Sārānsh was designed to meet the distinct needs of its inhabitant—a designer! The former two-bedroom house was stripped bare and converted into a minimal yet highly tactile living space with its studio. A majority of the materials were chosen based on how well they aged. Concrete, blue tiles and teak form the core of the material palette. Unlike most generic chic finished urban homes, a conscious choice was made to keep the “end product” unfinished, to make the house an oasis in the middle of the city, similar to the natural ever-changing sense of space of a vernacular cottage.

The entire house is visible as soon as you walk through the front door, owing to the open-plan layout that features just one door—that of the bathroom (also fashioned from fluted glass, ensuring an abundance of daylight in every nook of the space). A floor-seating dining table and an open kitchen seamlessly flow into a reading and entertainment den. The colour palette has been artfully curated based on the emotions associated with each room. White and grey undertones are accentuated by wood and brass accents. The kitchen and toilet feature a deep grey tone, whereas the cosy den is made entirely of wood. The bedroom comprises warm beige walls and an eccentric flooring pattern in blue hues. Shades of indigo and turquoise are interspersed in the ceramics, cushions, and sheer curtains. Finally, the walls are finished in pigmented lime plaster (to keep the space cool), and the wood used is reclaimed 60- to 80-year-old Valsad teak—both add to the rich, timeless appeal of the apartment.
