Harnessing the nostalgia of a bygone era, The Butler & the Bayleaf in Juhu aims to recreate the feeling of listening to our grandparents’ enthralling bedtime stories. Shabnam Gupta‘s The Orange Lane made use of vintage knick-knacks, a blue and white colour palette, wood furnishings and more to recreate the speakeasy-like ambience of Mumbai’s evolutionary years. Read the designers’ description below:

In the city that is home to individuals that are fiercely connected to it—from architecture to history and the magical feeling of dreams coming true—sits our attempt to recreate the magic of it’s past and present. The Butler & the Bayleaf is more than just a restaurant, it’s a journey. A journey that retraces numerous events that unfolded during the evolution of Bombay to Mumbai.

The entire design of The Butler & the Bayleaf revels in memories—like those of an old British home that housed gatherings wherein the love for authentic Indian home cooked meals were celebrated. The open-plan flow of the space evokes a sense of familiarity. It sort of feels like your grandmother’s home, refurbished into a restaurant. A long glass façade with greens and botanical prints bring warmth and light to the space. Columns are wrapped in wood panels, finished in deep blu hues and feature black and white photographs that unfold the story of generations.

A dark, wood finished bar design draws inspiration from yesteryear’s  speakeasies, with old school paneling and a play of wood and glass. The classic furniture and vintage pieces further weave together the feeling of ‘home’. The overall blue and white colour palate, with vintage cane fabric is also apparent in the furnishings, with a pop of yellow to enhance the effect. The accessories are left in their aged state, topping off the vintage ambience.
