Sprawling Bengal tigers, unending petal gardens and pink Taj Mahals are only a peek into designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s enchanting world. His second collaboration with Nilaya brings this fantastical vision to life, via a collection of hand-painted luxury wallpapers, revealed with the Asian Paints’ Brand Ambassador, Bollywood beauty Deepika Padukone.

All the wallpapers were unveiled on the designer’s Instagram account, and were punctuated with little anecdotes about his life, whether it was about his mother’s floral organdy sarees or the time he tried to feed turmeric popcorn to a tiger, but they all explored the designer’s eternal muse: Calcutta. “I grew up in a city outside Calcutta, where I grew up playing with squirrels and birds and ran around tennis lawns with my arms outstretched, pretending to be a fighter plane. We had a magical childhood because we didn’t have much, but what we didn’t have in resources, we made up for with imagination,” he says.

The collection, hand-rendered by 43 artists from the Sabyasachi Art Foundation, takes us time-travelling through the gullies of romantic India, and is aptly named ‘The India Revival Project’. “I want these wallpapers to be a celebration of all things Indian,” says the celebrity designer. “I believe we are a very decorative country. And I think we began feeling ashamed of colour and exuberance in the middle. While the rest of India is going modern or minimalist, I’ve realized that I can’t catch up because I like a bit of hedonism and decadence.”

While the collection is stunning, we can’t wait to see the designer style the wallpapers, in his ‘dream home’ in Calcutta. “It has stone flooring, high ceilings and it’s filled with mango trees. I would probably like to use the ‘Anek Buti’ and ‘India Moghul’ wallpaper in my home,” he decides.
