Bhandari Residence by Inscape Designers is a 1000-square-foot residence on Mumbai’s iconic Marine Drive that epitomises the term “quiet elegance.” The 2-BHK apartment has been designed for a couple in their sixties who wanted a neutral-toned but modern home. It involved an immense amount of civil work due to the previous condition of the house, which had a lot of issues like leaks and peeling plaster. We stripped the entire apartment to its bare shell and started rebuilding from there. We used a rich beige Italian marble for the flooring throughout the house to give it a seamless look. When the bedroom doors are left open, the same marble flooring continues into the hall and entrance passage, enabling the perception of a larger spatial volume.

For the living room, we opted for an L-shaped sofa with a chaise portion parallel to the low window. The sofa sits on a Cocoon Rugs carpet, and a subtle, light grey textured wall cover behind it complements the carpet’s weaves. For the dining area, we selected a table from Baro with a glass top. As this space is a bit tight, the glass top adds a lighter feel, and the continuous marble flooring can be seen through it. We added a bench on the living area side so that the view of the dining room isn’t blocked by the backsides of the dining chairs. The guest bedroom’s palette features soft teals and greys, perfectly complementing the attached bathroom’s tiles.

Magnolia’s handcrafted solid wooden four-poster bed is the focal point of the master bedroom. A textured, neutral beige wall cover adds character to this room and is the perfect backdrop highlighting the bed. The attached master bathroom is finished in similar tones of beige and brown tiles. The powder room was a tiny area of just 12 square feet! To visually increase the size of this area, we added a full-length floor-to-ceiling mirror. A ceiling-mounted tap above the pedestal basin adds drama to this space. The kitchen is once again conceptualised in a neutral palette of beige tiles with a granite countertop and laminate shutters for easy maintenance, as this area is one of the most frequently used by the owners.
